In a major boost to vocational education and workforce development, the Odisha government has announced plans to establish Centres of Excellence in 25 government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state. The initiative aims to strengthen advanced skill training and improve employability among youth, according to a report by The Times of India.
Officials said the proposed Centres of Excellence will focus on industry-relevant skills aligned with emerging sectors such as manufacturing, electronics, renewable energy, automation, and advanced welding technologies. The move is part of the state’s broader strategy to modernize technical education and meet the growing demand for skilled manpower.
Under the plan, selected ITIs will be upgraded with modern infrastructure, advanced machinery, digital learning tools, and updated curricula. Special emphasis will be placed on hands-on training, practical exposure, and industry collaboration to ensure students are job-ready upon completion of their courses.
State authorities believe that upgrading government ITIs will help bridge the gap between education and employment, particularly for students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds. By offering high-quality training within public institutions, the government aims to reduce dependence on costly private training centers.
Education and skill development officials noted that the Centres of Excellence will also support instructor training programs, ensuring that teaching staff are equipped with the latest technical knowledge and industry practices. Partnerships with industry players are expected to play a key role in curriculum design, internships, and placement support.
The announcement comes at a time when skill-based education is gaining renewed focus at both state and national levels. With industries increasingly seeking trained technicians and skilled workers, initiatives like this are seen as critical to strengthening India’s vocational education ecosystem.
While the implementation timeline is yet to be finalized, officials confirmed that planning and identification of ITIs are already underway. Once operational, the Centres of Excellence are expected to significantly enhance the quality and relevance of skill training in Odisha, positioning the state as a key contributor to India’s skilled workforce.
