Government schools in Delhi have resumed the distribution of sanitary napkins to girl students under the Kishori Yojana, reaffirming the city government’s focus on menstrual hygiene, health awareness, and school retention, according to a report by The Times of India.
Education department officials said the initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted access to sanitary products for adolescent girls studying in government schools. The program is designed to support students from economically weaker sections and address challenges linked to menstrual health that often affect attendance and academic participation.
Under the scheme, sanitary napkins will be made available free of cost through schools, with teachers and staff tasked with ensuring smooth distribution. Officials noted that the process has been streamlined to avoid delays and ensure that students receive supplies regularly throughout the academic year.
The Kishori Yojana has been a key component of Delhi’s student welfare initiatives, focusing not only on distribution but also on awareness. Schools are encouraged to conduct sessions on menstrual hygiene, health, and nutrition, helping students better understand and manage their well-being.
Education experts have welcomed the move, stating that access to basic hygiene products plays a crucial role in reducing absenteeism among adolescent girls. Studies have shown that lack of menstrual hygiene facilities and products can negatively impact education outcomes, particularly in public school systems.
School administrators said that resuming the distribution after administrative clearances will help restore confidence among students and parents. “This is not just about providing a product, but about dignity, health, and continuity in education,” a senior school official said.
The initiative aligns with broader national and state-level efforts to promote gender-sensitive education policies. Officials emphasized that the government remains committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for girls, especially during their adolescent years.
With schools now fully operational after recent holidays, the timely resumption of the Kishori Yojana is expected to benefit thousands of students across Delhi. Authorities said monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure effective implementation and address any issues that may arise at the school level.
