In a dynamic and highly regulated industry like agrochemicals, leadership requires a blend of innovation, sustainability, and strategic foresight. Abhishek Aggarwal, with over two decades of expertise, has consistently exemplified this balance. In this candid interview, he shares his journey, leadership philosophies, and vision for the future.
Q1: With more than 20 years of experience in the agrochemical industry, how do you reflect on your professional journey so far?
Abhishek Aggarwal:
Reflecting on over 22 years in this industry, my journey has been both enriching and educational. One of the highlights was leading the core team responsible for the complete lifecycle of product development—from identification to registration, and finally, launching them in the domestic market ahead of competitors.
My extensive travel across 21 cities in China gave me deep insights into global procurement, and I developed strong two-way strategic alliances with Indian and international peers. These collaborations, built on mutual benefit, have been vital for sustainable business growth.
In previous roles, I was part of teams that secured venture capital funding and strategic joint ventures, including collaborations with two Japanese conglomerates. One of my most satisfying achievements was driving our entry into the U.S. market from scratch. Backed by full trust from management and an empowered team, the entire experience has been deeply rewarding. Honestly, I love what I do—when you’re passionate about your work, it never feels exhausting.
Q2: How have these experiences shaped your leadership as a COO?
Abhishek Aggarwal:
Firstly, staying aligned with the organization’s core culture is essential. As a leader, you’re the brand ambassador, and maintaining the company’s ethics and values should always come first.
Secondly, I strongly believe in building a capable second line of leadership from day one. It’s our responsibility to empower the next generation to lead. This not only ensures continuity but also allows you to focus on excellence and take on new responsibilities confidently.
During 2023—a tough year for our industry—my global exposure and strong partner relationships enabled us to anticipate risks and implement an effective plan B. We exceeded market expectations, thanks to a resilient team and timely execution.
Lastly, ethical business practices are non-negotiable. Whether it’s dealing with customers, vendors, or team members, doing the right thing builds long-term trust. At Bharat, we truly live our tagline: “Let’s grow ethically.”
Q3: How do you manage the stress and complexity that comes with your role while staying focused on the bigger vision?
Abhishek Aggarwal:
It begins with passion. Passion fuels resilience and strategic thinking. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and improve. Over the years, I’ve learned not to be shaken by obstacles. Instead, I see them as stepping stones.
Having a dependable team and being part of a forward-thinking organization makes all the difference. The sense of satisfaction you get from overcoming hurdles reinforces your ability to take on new ones, while staying aligned with the larger vision.
Q4: What is your outlook for the agrochemical industry over the next five years?
Abhishek Aggarwal:
I’m very optimistic. I believe India is poised to become a leading global supplier in agrochemicals. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with more qualified companies focusing on R&D, backward integration, and strict EHS compliance.
The market will offer ample opportunities for both existing and new players, especially those who prioritize sustainability and innovation. Over the next five to ten years, I see Indian companies making a significant global impact.
Q5: What advice would you give to emerging leaders in this industry?
Abhishek Aggarwal:
Trust your team and empower them. From my experience working with visionary entrepreneurs, I’ve learned the power of decentralization. When employees feel empowered and aligned with the company’s vision, they take ownership and deliver exceptional results.
Encourage innovation, nurture collaboration, and always lead by example. A leader’s role is not just to manage but to inspire. When you build a culture based on trust and integrity, you automatically drive long-term growth and excellence.
